Elversberg had never played in the Bundesliga before this season, and their fans surely would have been fearing the worst when the fixture list was announced. They could hardly have faced a more daunting start, with home games against 2024 champions Bayer Leverkusen and back-to-back Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich coming either side of a trip to Borussia Monchengladbach.
And yet here we are heading into matchday three, and Elversberg are sitting third in the table, only behind Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. Under the stewardship of head coach Vincent Wagner, they've picked up two successive wins, scoring seven goals already, and another victory against Bayern on Sunday would take them five points clear of Vincent Kompany's all-star side.
This is a position that Elversberg could never even have imagined being in just four years ago, when they were playing in the fourth tier of German football. It's been a remarkable journey, and one that has created an unshakable belief within the dressing room.
